INITIAL & RESPONSE POSTS ARE DUE ON THE SAME DAY
INITIAL POST:
One of the research goals of the National Institute on Aging is to understand health disparities related to aging and to develop strategies to improve the health status of older adults in diverse populations. The following is a list of those specific strategies:
F-1: Identify and understand environmental, social, cultural, behavioral, and biological factors that create and sustain health disparities among older adults.Links to an external site.
F-2: Develop strategies to promote active life expectancy and improve the health status of older adults in diverse populations.Links to an external site.
F-3: Develop and implement strategies to increase inclusion of underrepresented populations in aging research.Links to an external site.
F-4: Support research on women’s health, including studies of how sex and gender influence aging processes and outcomes.Links to an external site.
Choose from one of the four topics above and answer at least two of the following questions (a, b, c, d, e) in your initial discussion post.
According to research by the Commonwealth FundLinks to an external site. (2022) more than one quarter of the US population report they felt they did not get the care or treatment they needed due to discrimination. More specifically, one in four Black and Hispanic adults age 60 and over reported they felt “they had been treated unfairly or have felt that their health concerns were not taken seriously by health professionals because of their racial or ethnic background.”
a. What impact does prior healthcare discrimination, experienced by many people of color, have on developing trusting relationships with healthcare providers?
b. Do you feel that nursing school curricula should educate students about how the U.S. health care system has harmed patients of color and other historically marginalized communities? If so, why? If no, why not?
c. How do you believe the lack of diversity in the healthcare workforce contributes to this problem?
d. What methods has your current (or previous if you are not currently working as a registered nurse) done to provide culturally and contextually appropriate education which addresses patients’ communication needs and preferences.
e. Can you identify current policies which enable discrimination in the healthcare system?
RESPONSE POST:
Choose an initial peer post to review that selected a different strategy than the one you chose and provide an insightful response which encourages further dialogue and discussion.
FEEDBACK & GRADING:
Discussion posts are graded by your assigned academic coach within 72 hours of the due date. Refer to the Discussion Assignment Rubric for specifics of how you will be graded.
APA FORMAT:
APA formatting will be used for discussion posts. Unfortunately, the Canvas discussion forum does not lend itself to setting up your narrative to APA formatting in regards to margins and indentations. However, you are required to comply with APA format in regards to all other components, i.e., grammar, spelling, complete sentences, proper use of headings, correct citations and reference sequencing, and use of capitalization and italics.
Do not write a formal paper with title, abstract or reference pages. You must use headings to delineate sections of your narrative that speak to the question(s). Be brief, yet concise, when answering the questions and include citations to support your statements.
Reference all sources you’ve cited within your answers at the end of your narrative. It is required that you use two current, scholarly resources.
Do not upload a document, if you do so this will not be graded. It is best for you to write your discussion post as a Word document and cut and paste it into the discussion post. Many students have reported losing their work after typing within the Canvas discussion board. Of course, this meant the student had no saved copy and had to re-do the assignment.
