The document title of your paper -which should be in word.doc (or .docx)- must follow this format: First and Last name, Soc 310, Weekly Reflection 2

The length of the paper must be between 400 and 600 words. You can use any font and it can be single or double spaced; the most important thing is to fulfill the stipulated word count. Remember that you will lose points if the paper does not meet the minimum word count (400 words), as well as if it exceeds the maximum word requirement (600 words) (the bibliography will not be counted as part of the word count).
In-text citations and the Works Cited page must follow APA style guidelines.[2] Any information taken from the Internet must be included as a footnote in which the link of the webpage is provided.

Essay Question:
For Weekly Reflection 2, you must explain how Differential Association (Sutherland, & Cressey, 1999) and Labeling (Becker 2018) describe how people become deviant. For your analysis and comparison of these theories you can used the additional audiovisual resources about the war on drugs provided in W.2.3.
W2.3 resources
Watch and Read: The war on drugs, explained. Vox May 8, 2016.
Watch: Netflix documentary 13th by Filmmaker Ava DuVernay.
Watch: Netflix series Patriot Act (Hassan Minhaj) S.6. The Legal Marijuana industry is Rigged
Watch: Michelle Alexander on “The New Jim Crow: Mass Incarceration in the Age of Colorblindness” in Democracy Now! (youtube) (https://www.democracynow.org/2010/3/11/legal_scholar_michelle_alexander_on_the) -video link

It’s important that you do not summarize the texts or the film in your reflection essay (summarizing is not analyzing). The paper should focus on reflecting on how these two theories describe how people become deviant.
Among others, the following questions can help you write your reflection essay:
How is deviance described by these two theories? How do people learn to be deviant? What are some of the critiques made by labeling theory about Differential Association? (For those of you using the additional audiovisual resources from W.2.3: How does the war on drugs help us understand Differential Association and labeling theories?) The most important thing is that you try to be creative!
